High prolactin levels can cause a variety of symptoms, including unwanted breast milk production, missed or irregular menstrual periods, difficulty conceiving in women, and enlarged breasts or reduced sexual function in men. As a dopamine receptor agonist, Cabergoline mimics the action of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that naturally suppresses prolactin release, effectively normalising prolactin levels and relieving these symptoms.

This medication is an ergot derivative, originally developed from a type of fungus, but it has been refined for medical use to enhance its safety and efficacy. Beyond hyperprolactinaemia, Cabergoline is occasionally used off-label to manage other conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, due to its dopamine-stimulating properties.
